Bookshop Description

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Brighton, Afrori Books is Sussex’s only dedicated bookshop specialising in books by Black authors. Afrori Books has grown into a vital cultural hub. Afrori Books invites everyone to discover, celebrate, and amplify Black voices. Afrori Books was Bookseller of the Year in both 2023 and 2025 and Brighton retailer of the year 2024 & 2025. The family-run business has a powerful mission: Support Black authors. Create diverse bookshelves. Be a voice against injustice A warm, welcoming environment where readers, writers, and the curious can all feel at home. Whether you’re seeking contemporary fiction, poetry, history, children’s books, science fiction, romance, or memoir, Afrori Books prides itself on creating space for literature in all its diversity. The shop has become a cherished destination for book lovers, authors, educators, and community leaders alike. Families and individuals come to Afrori gather for craft mornings, author events, Book clubs, yoga classes, music events, hair workshops, and of course the ever popular supper clubs - a two-course Caribbean meal with a bestselling author. The shop has hosted an impressive roster of over 300 guest speakers, including; Diane Abbot, Lenny Henry, Eve, Caleb Azumah Nelson, and Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu. They work closely with small and large businesses, numerous universities and schools across Sussex, organising shop visits, pop-up shops and events, author visits and Brighton’s only Anti Racist Kids (ARK) club. Delivered in various schools throughout Sussex. The club’s impact is significant, cultivating an early appreciation for the importance of equity. There is a pay-it-forward scheme that allows customers to attend events or purchase books. Afrori Books boasts an even larger selection online, making it easy for readers from across the UK—and beyond—to diversify their bookshelves. Whether through www.afroribooks.co.uk or through bookshop.org, the shop’s reach continues to grow, amplifying the impact of Black authors. Afrori Books is the beating heart of a movement to centre Black voices, foster community, and nurture a love of reading in all who pass through its doors. For those seeking to diversify their bookshelves, support Black authors, or simply experience the warmth of a true literary community, Afrori Books awaits—ready to welcome you into its story.
