Can you spaek Shaetlan? Take our quiz!

Jen Hadfield is the author of Storm Pegs: A Life Made in Shetland, which transports us to the remote and beautiful archipelago where she has made her home. Do you know the meanings of spaegie and filsket? Take her quiz all about the Shetland dialect.

Jen Hadfield

"My book, Storm Pegs, is a lyrical love letter to Shetland, my island home for seventeen years. As a poet, part of the pull of this beautiful archipelago is its poetic and expressive language, still used by Shetlanders today. Shaetlan is remarkable for its Norn origins (Shetlanders and Norwegians can, in some cases, understand each other) and its local precision (a whole dictionary is dedicated to its many expressive and glorious words for weather and the sea alone) and playfulness. Shaetlan is full of sound, movement, mood and texture, and when I moved to Shetland nearly 18 years ago, it entirely romanced me, rescuing me from a bad case of writer's block. So, although you may not have learned Shaetlan, will you still find that you can 'spaek' to the 'peerie' 'draatsi', or 'yarn' to a 'maa' as you wander along 'da banks'? If so, a world of wonder awaits you." Jen Hadfield
